Blog 4: Media Violence on Television

Violence in programming like cartoons or cage fighting/wrestling may seem less harmful and entertaining, but it can affect the audience or viewers, especially children. Depending on the age group, some people are sensitive to what they view and some are desensitise to what they view.
According to Seymour Feshbach, the study of Catharsis Theory applies to people who view violence, which causes them to let off steam. This theory mainly applies to children, which they see violence, but engage in less violence; similar to Desensitization Theory. And according to Leonard Berkowitz, the study of Priming Theory is when angry people view violent media and become more angry; simlar to Sensitization Theory.
Some programmers do not realize their viewers, like children, may be affected by the entertainment. Continuous viewing of violent may result to aggressive attitudes and behaviors. Also, emotional effects of violent media may be extended or immediate. Below is a content analyst chart and graph of a cartoon and cage fight of Batman-cartoon and UFC-cage fight.
