Blog 3: Stereotypes

Some ethnic groups are stereotyped because of the way they are viewed, covered, perceived in the media. Stereotype is when a race/ethnic group is portrayed or biased perception or conception of an reality by people or social group. According to Walter Lippman, he talks about stereotyping and how public opinion is structured. Basically Lippman was saying, what is reality vs. pictures in our heads.

Also, there are some theories that covers stereotyping. Priming and cultivation theories are two major theories. Priming theory is when people construct mental schema they use to understand and give meaning to things in their world. Cultivation theory is when an individual encounters depictions of groups of people on television programming. Over time, they come to cultivate or think a belief that the population of real world resembles that of their television  world. Below is a content analysis on stereotyping of Arab/European culture in Home of the Brave.
